We acknowledge the traditional custodians of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, waterways and community. We pay respect to their Elders past and present and acknowledge the youth of community as the emerging Elders of tomorrow and consider what responsibility we as a whole community have to support that.
Reconciliation
Action Plan
Mossman Support Services is committed to reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We are currently developing our Reconciliation Action Plan — a meaningful document that will guide our actions, relationships and accountability.
This page will be updated when our RAP is complete. In the meantime, you can read about our existing commitments below.
What is a Reconciliation Action Plan?
A Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is a structured framework developed through Reconciliation Australia that helps organisations put their commitment to reconciliation into concrete, measurable action.
A RAP outlines specific actions across three core areas — relationships, respect and opportunities — that an organisation commits to delivering for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
For a community service organisation like MSS — operating on Kuku Yalanji Country in Far North Queensland — a RAP is not just a compliance document. It is an expression of genuine respect, relationship and responsibility.
-
Relationships
Building and maintaining respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and organisations.
-
Respect
Actively learning about and honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, knowledge and rights.
-
Opportunities
Creating meaningful opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in employment, procurement and in the services we deliver.
Our existing commitments
While our formal RAP is in development, our commitment to First Nations peoples and cultures is already woven into how we operate as an organisation in the Douglas Shire.
Yalanji Early Readers
Our Early Readers program specifically supports First Nations children and families with literacy, language and cultural connection.
On Country Programs
Our Youth Centre runs on-country cultural programs, strengthening First Nations identity and connection for young people in the Douglas Shire.
Community Partnership
We work alongside First Nations community members, organisations and Elders to ensure our services are culturally safe, respectful and genuinely useful.
